VM-8024: Descriptive Embryology
Description: A brief introduction to the early stages of development in common domestic animals. Covers the period from fertilization of the oocyte to initiation of organogenesis. Also introduces concepts on the mechanisms of development and the teratogenic effects of exogenous factors. Includes an introduction to the phenomenon of multiple pregnancies in different species, and comparative patterns of placentation. This course provides an overview of the cellular events immediately preceding and following fertilization, as well as a synopsis of general developmental features of gastrulation, placentation, and ontogeny of selected body systems. Completion of the course should greatly assist students in understanding various anatomical aspects of the adult animal body, as well as common congenital malformations. Pre: first-year standing in the DVM curriculum.
