Description: African-American art and material culture, from its beginnings in the tribal traditions of Africa to its contemporary manifestations. A chronological study of the major artists, movements and styles. Analysis of works using key critical and philosophical texts. Emphasis on the role of gender, race, and ethnicity in the production of art and material culture.
